Transdisciplinary: Research-Community-Commerce.

The opulence of my research & the 21st century city demands a dynamic, holistic & cooperative ethic. A research method that celebrates the paradigm shift that is apparent within the western culture in terms of biospheric economy, epistemology. A system that allows me to engage in complexities of living systems, not to shy away from them. feeling overwhelmed by the depth of research, when I lack the understanding, when I am lost in the wed of life, it is within that moment, of “out of controlness”, is when new thinking begins.

My endeavor is to capture many methods of research, “research negotiation”, action lead research, systems thinking approach, encompasses my way of thinking, a system which relates to my experience, knowledge & view of the world. That benefits & excels my future progressive thought. This method is about complexities, systems of interconnections.  This approach enables & encompass the ecological sphere, community sphere, research sphere, commercial sphere. These 4 systems are dominant elements within the city. They are one system, positive and negative feedback loops creates thoughts that vibrate through the butterfly effect, when an act, a thought, and a mindset, can & will change the world. Gregory Bateson would call this “the pattern that connects”. This is my position, my own standpoint. Out of Control.  Out of Control is the nature of the city systems, similar to Rainforest ecosystems, and advanced ecological systems as a whole. These “systems” can not be understood from a linear standpoint, from the pico scale. We need a transdisciplinary approach, whole brain collaboration in research, commerce and community.

Transdisciplinarity Research: The Profoundly Radical Whole.

Approach. There were many ways this research could of been conducted. In a direct, linear & traditional fashion. Research would sit and stay within the research sphere. The research would of been accomplished outside of the institute, interviews, library visits, interventions. The action-lead-research would still been completed, and new knowledge created. This singular view, the cartesian approach which has dominated the science’s throughout, seems to tell us only one half the story. This story of parts and things. To witness the sole of the hive, you can not find it in the anatomy of a honey bee. The anatomy of a honey bee would exhibit the structure and form of the bee, flight knowledge etc. The alphabet can not be fully understood by analysing one of twenty six components, nor by half, 13 components. Both a cartesian & whole approach is important. Right and left thinking enables whole brain collaboration. But this thesis will concentrate on the holistic, subjective, random, wholeness research approach.

Cross-disciplinary, Multidisciplinary, interdisciplinarity are the opposite approach to the cartesian method. Multidisciplinary, Blending the perspectives of several disciplines will ultimately enrich the topic in question. Moreover, our understanding of the topic in terms of its own discipline is deepened by a fertile multidisciplinary approach. The multidisciplinary approach overflows disciplinary boundaries while its goal remains limited to the framework of disciplinary research. Interdisciplinarity In line with a number of works (Porter et al. 2006, p. 3), interdisciplinarity is defined here as a mode of research that integrates concepts or theories, tools or techniques, information or data from different bodies of knowledge. As highlighted by Porter et al. the key concept is ‘knowledge integration’. In order to capture the process of integration in research, we need to investigate two aspects: Diversity: number, balance and degree of difference between the bodies of knowledge concerned; Coherence: the extent that specific topics, concepts, tools, data, etc. used in a research process are related.

Multidisciplinary, interdisciplinarity approach gave birth to a Transdiscipline approach, the trajectory of knowledge. The Transdiscipline it revalues the role of deeply rooted intuition, of imagination, of sensitivity, and of the body in the transmission of knowledge (Nicolescu. Transdiscipline seeks to hyper-interconnect, into a sphere of systems,  Therefore a Transdisciplinarity also ” integrates concepts or theories, tools or techniques, information or data from different bodies of knowledge” , as with Interdisciplinarity. but the transdisciplinarity pushes these resources in the, demography, culture and community, social & life systems. On both bios & technos, creating levels of information, systems interacting on a practical & holistic transformation. “Trans” means to go beyond.

Balancing Innovation & Destruction

Throughout time we learned to adapted to the conditions of our environment that we live in. Nature continues to progress, adapted, evolved to the environmentally conditions as darwin showed. We the human animal, the human being has adapted, progressed, and changed to the demands of the environment. We have learned to live better within the restrictions of environment conditions. Our major condition, issues within our environment is the growth population and urbanism. I will show you progression. If we still forged food like hunter gathers did 10,000 year ago, we would need 85 worlds (land mass), to feed 6 billion people forging. If we were still farming the organic way, like in the 1950s, we would need, 82% of the worlds land mass to feed the  6 billion population, opposed to the 38% we use now, progress (K.Kelly WTW. Pg58). Just 60 years ago, 1940 one in five citizens that lived shanghai was a squatter, them one million squatters stay kept upgrading their environment,slum, an within one generation their shanty town become one of the first 21st century cities, now the leading mage-city(K.Kelly WTW. Pg53. Change always changes, always progressing.

From a biological and technology stand point, I will use the “paradigm shift graphs” produced by Ray Kurzweil in this jaw dropping book “The Singularity in Near” (2005), to illustrate with clarity the idea of progress. The graphic highlights the count down to the singularity. Biological evolution & technological evolution but more interestedly is the continuing acceleration, indicted by the shorter time to the next event (2 billion years from the origin of life to cells, 14 years from the PC to the World Wide Web. This graphic also brings this idea to the surface, that, there is no separation between, biology, ecology, technology, it is all one spear, on the trajectory life, a life that is somehow possible, but highly improbable, like the chance of finding two of the same peddles on a beach.

But is seems with innovation, improvement and progress in a man made world, a backlash is the inevitable. The backlash is a destructive force, which usually destroys the most precise element in the life, life itself Nature. The industry revolution is a prime example, it was not a born but a made in the mind of women, innovation, improvements and progress that raised the standard of living, created, possibilities, wealth. This was a engineering revolution, like the wheel.
